Up and “app” ‘em

NICE is exploring new worlds.

We’re in the midst of building some simple web apps and gadgets to bring us fully into the 2.0 world.

Any helpers out there? Let us know if you’d be interested in helping / guiding / supporting / cheer leading us in this endeavor.

21 Nicest People of 2006

During the week of Thanksgiving, NICE Magazine will announce the First Annual 21 Nicest People of 2006.

What better date to recognize the nicest people of the year than during the most thankful time of the year. On Wednesday, November 22, 2006, NICE Magazine will unveil the names of 21 people who inspired all of us to be nicer, better, cooler and” gooder” this year.

To nominate those you felt were amongst the nicest people of 2006 , just email D. Robert at drobert@nicemagazine.org and include names, your reasons for the nominations and either an email, phone number or snail mail address for the nominees. If it is a famous or well known person, contact information is not necessary. Also, if she/he is not a personal acquaintance and you only know about her/him through something you read or saw in a news clip, just include a link or reference to the story.

The criteria is simple:

1) The person must be real (i.e., not animated);
2) The person — one of his/her agents or his/her persona (person doesn’t have to be alive) — must have done something nice in 2006;
3) The person — or one of his/her agents — must be well known and/or reachable by email or phone.

Serge is the most Southerner Russian in the world. Period. There is not one other Russian in the whole world that is more culturally in tune with Eastern Tennessee than him. Serge knows everything you ever need to know about bytes, RAM and wysiwyg. And that’s ditto for college or NFL football. Name any pro team in the last twenty years and Serge will probably know the name of their quarterback. Shoot, he’ll probably throw in the name of the quarterback coach, ball boy and concession manager just to make it interesting.

Rachel Young – Chicago, IL

As far as pure talent goes, Rachel has this going for her in a big way. Probably having the highest I.Q. in the group you would never know it because she spends so much of her time being modest and telling other people how smart and beautiful and great they are. But really, if you don’t know the answer to something, chances are she will. Rachel is a magazine editor by day and a lover of haute gastronomy by night (can you say KFC?).

Lauren Williams – Columbia, MO

Lauren has been called “Nice” all her life. So, when the call came to come and help out with this new magazine, it was a cinch. Destiny or not, she is the one person who is able to talk about the niceties of being nice and bring the subject into the larger social context. I know, sounds heavy, but it’s needed and Lauren is great at it. Lauren loves running (like 26.2 miles), being a mom, letting people into traffic even if she’s late for work and belting show tunes while she’s at it.

Richard Raeke – Needham, MA

Raeke is perhaps the sharpest tool in this shed. He’s the kind of newspaper journalist that makes his job look easy. He’s paid his dues by covering hazardous waste in the heart of ‘Bama, the criminal courts in Florida and was nearly “taken care of” by Castro loyalist in Cuba. Raeke enjoys quipping with friends, scheming his next gig and hitting the lobster rigs in Casco Bay every now-and-then.

T. Mac – New York, NY

T. is an idea maven and first class brain stormer. We’re talking deluge. Not a photo journalist by trade, she is going to do it anyway, because she can. T. loves her dog Sparky (really, it’s scary) and being super sweet to so many people. T. reigns from the Quad Cities (if you don’t know where this is, you’re only living half, er, one-quarter of a life) and currently makes her home all over the damn place in New York.
