More charity in China

This article from Guardian Unlimited (UK) covers in more depth the question of charity amongst China’s burgeoning capitalists.

The early numbers seem to suggest that the levels of giving are low when compared to Western countries. But, we have to remember that a lot of this new found wealth is new for many Chinese and we need to give their new economy time before we form judegements about their philanthropic ways.

Promising is the level of giving toward foreign relief projects. Last year the Chinese Red Cross collected 30 million pounds (approx. $50 million USD) for the Tsunami, Katrina and the earthquake. Not huge on scale with American donors, but perhaps a great start.
